atraivopapattimāha-- "apatanādapatyam" iti. yannimittaṃ hi yasay pāpeṣvapatanaṃ tadapatanāt tasyāpatyaṃ bhavati. tasmādyo vyavahitena janitaḥ so'pi paramaprakṛtivācyasyārthasyāpatyaṃ bhavati,tasyāpi yenāpatanāt. paramaprakṛtigrahaṇañcopalakṣaṇaṃ veditavyam. itaraprakṛtivācyasyāpi hrarthasyāvyavahitajanito'patyaṃ bhavatyeva. yatpunaruktam-- kasyāyamityukte utpādayitāraṃ vyapadiśati, nātmānamiti, na tenotpādayiturevāpatyena yogaḥ, śakyate pratipādayitum. yasmānna tatra yasya tenāpatanaṃ sa jijñāsitaḥ syāt, kiṃ tarhi? ya utpādayitāraṃ vyapadiśati nātmānam. yadi yasya tu tenāpatanaṃ sa jijñāsitaḥ syāt, tadā''tmānamapi vyapadiśedeva. yadi ca sarve'patyena na yujyeran, "apatyaṃ pautraprabhṛti gotram" 4.1.162 iti yo'yamapatyapautraprabhṛtiśabdayoḥ sāmānādhikaraṇyena nirdeśaḥ, sa nopapadyate; yadapekṣayā pautrādivyapadeśamāsādayanti pumāṃsastaṃ prati teṣāmanapatyatvāt. tasmādato'pi nirdeśāt-- sarve'patyena yujyanta iti vijñāyate. "tatputtro'pi gārgyaḥ" iti. apiśabdāt tatpautrādirapi. kiṃ punaḥ kāraṇaṃ tatputtro'pi gāgrya ityāha-- "sarvasmin" ityādi. yadapi gārgyāyaṇa ityatraikena vyavahitena janitaṃ gotrāpatyaṃ yasmāt tatrāpi gargaśabdādyañeva bhavati, tasmāt tatputtro'pi gāgryo bhavati. gargaśabdādityanena paramaprakṛterbhavatīti darśayati. etaccaikagrahaṇāllabhyata ityuktam.
"atha vā" ityādinā prakṛtiniyamaṃ darśayati prakṛtiniyamastvekaśabdasya prakṛtisāmānādhikaraṇyāllabhyate. ekaśabdo'tra prāthamyaniyame vatrtata iti veditavyam, yathā-- vargāṇāṃ prathamadvitīyāḥ saṃvṛtakaṇṭhāḥ ()āāsānupradānā aghoṣā eke'lpaprāṇā itare sarve mahāprāṇā iti. atra hi prathame'lpaprāṇā iti gamyate. ekaśabdasyedaṃ vivaraṇam-- "prathamā prakṛtiḥ" iti. kā ca prathamā? yā paramaprakṛtirapratyayāntā "garga naḍa" ityevamādikā. "prakṛtirniyamyate" iti. prathamaiva prakṛtiḥ pratyayamutpādayati, nāprathamā-- gārgigāgryagāgryāyaṇaprabhṛtiśabdāḥ pratyayāntāḥ. gargasyāpatyaṃ gārgyaḥ, tatputtro'pi gārgyaḥ. naḍasyāpatyaṃ nāḍāyanaḥ, tatputtro'pi nāḍāyanaḥ. sarvatra vyavahitajanite'pi gotrāpatye prathamā prakṛtiḥ pratyayamutpādayati॥

tadāha–gotre eka evāpatyapratyayaḥ syāditi. aupagava iti. upagorgotrāpatye
`tasyāpatya'mityaṇ. gāgrya iti. gargasya gotrāpatye `gargādibhya' iti yañ.
nāḍāyana iti. naḍasya gotrāpatye `naḍādibhyaḥ' iti phak. `gotra eka eva pratyayaḥ
syā'dityeboktau tvanantarāpatyapratyayāntādaupagavaśabdādiñpratyayo na nivāryeta.
niyamasya sajātīyaviṣayatayā gotrapratyayāntādeva gotrapratyayo vāryeta.
ato'patyagrahaṇamityāhuḥ. nanvekasmingotre
yugapadanekapratyayā'prasaktevryarthamidaṃ sūtramiti cet, maivam-apatyaśabdo hi putra
eva rūḍha ityeka pakṣaḥ. putrādisādhāraṇa ityanyaḥ pakṣa iti prakṛtasūtrabhāṣye
sthitam. tadetat `apatyaṃ pautraprabhṛtī'ti sūtravyākhyāvasare prapañcitaṃ cāsmābhiḥ.
tatra prathamapakṣe upagoḥ pautre apatyapratyayena bubodhayiṣite sati tasya
upaguputrāpatyasya upaguṃ pratyapatyatvā'bhāvāt `tasyāpatya'mityaṇna sambhavati.
tataśca upaguputre vācye `tasyāpatya'mityaṇā aupagavaśabde vyutpādite sati,
aupagavasyāpatye vastutaḥ upagostṛtīyā gotre vivakṣite aupagavaśabdāt `ata i'ñiti iñi
aupagavirityanenaiva upagostṛtīyo bodhanīyaḥ syāt. evañca upagostṛtīye vivakṣite
upagoraṇ aupagavādiñiti prakṛtidvayātpratyayadvayamaniṣṭaṃ syāt. tatra yadyapi
upagoraṇiṣṭaḥ, tathāpi upagostṛtīye vivakṣite aniṣṭamiñpratyayamaṇpratyayo ghaṭayatīti
so'pyaniṣṭa eva. tathāca tatrāniṣṭapratyayadvayanivṛttaye eko gotre apatyapratyayaḥ
syādityanapatye'pi upagostṛtīye apatyapratyayo vidhīyate. saca vastuto'ṇeva, na
tviñ, adantatvā'bhāvāt. vihite ca tasminnaupagavādiñapi nivartate, gotre
bubodhayiṣite ekasyaivāpatyapratyayasya vidheḥ. ataḥ pratyayadvamālā nivartate.
evamupagoścaturthe vivikṣite tasya upaguṃ tatputraṃ ca pratyayapatyatvā'bhāvāt
pautraṃ pratyevāpatyatvādaupagaviśabdāt `yañiñośceti phaki prakṛtitrayādaniṣṭā
`aupagavāyana' iti pratyayatrayamālā syāt. upagoḥ pañcame vivakṣite tu
aupagavāyanaśabdādiñi `aupagavāyani'rityevaṃ prakṛticatuṣṭayamālā syāt. ṣaṣṭhe tu
aupagavāyaniśabdātphaki `aupagavāyanāyana' ityevaṃ prakṛtipañcakātpañca pratyayāḥ syuḥ.
tadevaṃ phagiñoḥ paramparāyāṃ mūlaprakṛterupagoḥ śatatame gotre vivakṣite
ekonaśatātprakṛtibhyaḥ ekonaśatamaniṣṭapratyayāḥ syuḥ. tadevaṃ phagiñoḥ paramparāyāṃ
mūlapratṛterupagoḥ śatatame gotre vivakṣite ekonaśatātprakṛtibhyaḥ
ekonaśatamaniṣṭapratyayāḥ syuḥ. atra tṛtīyaprabhṛti ka\ufffdsmaścidgotre
vivakṣite upaguṃ pratyanapatye'pi tasmin `eko gotre' ityaṇeva bhavati, natu iñādi.
yadā tvapatyaśabdaḥ putrapautrādisādhāraṇastadā yadyapi upagoranantarāpatye putre iva
pautrādiṣvapi vivakṣiteṣu `tasyāpatya'mityaṇi aupagava itīṣṭaṃ sidhyati. tathāpi
upagoranantarāpatye aṇi sati aupagavasyānantarāpatye upagostṛtīye vivakṣite
dvitīyasmādekaḥ pratyayoniṣṭaḥ prasajyeta. evamupagoścaturthe vivakṣite siddhe'pi
upagoraṇi aupagave, tasmādiñi aupagaviḥ, tasmātphaki aupagavāyana ityevaṃ pratyayatrayamapi
kadācitprasajyeta. tatrāpi upagormūlaprakṛteraṇiṣṭa eva. iñphakau tu pratyayāvaniṣṭau.
tathā upagoścaturthe vivakṣite dvitīyasmādeko'niṣṭapratyayaḥ, tṛtīyasmādanya
ityevaṃ prakṛtidvayādaniṣṭau dvau pratyayāviti paryavasyati. evaṃ pañcame
prakṛtitrayātrayaḥ pratyayāḥ. ṣaṣṭhe prakṛ-ticatuṣṭaya#āccatvāraḥ pratyayā ityevaṃ
mūlācchatatame gotre aṣṭanavateraṣṭanavatiraniṣṭapratyayāḥ syuḥ. tatra `eko gotre' iti
niyamavidhiḥ–`gotre eka eva pratyayaḥ syā'diti. tatrāpi prathamātikrame
kāraṇā'bhāvānmūlaprakṛteryaḥ pratyayaḥ prāptuṃ yogyaḥ sa eveti phalati. sūtre
ekaśabdaḥ prathamaparyāyaḥ. `eke mukhyānyakevalāḥ' ityamaraḥ. mukhe bhavo mukhyaḥ=prathamaḥ.
`eko'nyārthe pradhāne ca prathame kevale tathā' iti kośāntaram. tathāca mūlaprakṛtereva
gotre vivakṣite svayogyapratyayalābha iti vyākhyāntaram. gotre ekaḥ prathama
evaśabdaḥ pratyayatpādaka iti. tadetatsarvaṃ ślokadvayena saṃgṛhṇāti–gotre
svaikoneti. atra prathamaślokānte śrutaṃ `prasajyate' ityetatpadaṃ pūrvārdhe
paramparetyanantaramapi saṃbadhyate. tatra svaṃ=gotraṃ mūlapuruṣopagvapekṣayā yatsaṃkhyākaṃ
tadapekṣayā ekonasaṅkhyākānāmaniṣṭapratyayānāṃ paramparaivoktarītyā prasajyeta, natu
kadācidapi gotre aupagava ityaṇantamiṣṭaṃ sidhyatītyarthaḥ.
tat mūlapuruṣopagvakṣayā yatsaṅkhyākaṃ tadapekṣayā dvyūnasaṅkhyākaprakṛtibhyastāvatāṃ
pratyayānāmaniṣṭānāmutpattiruktarītyā prasajyata ityarthaḥ. nanu kathamidaṃ
pakṣadvayamityata āha–apatyamityādi matabhedenetyantam. `putra evāpatya'miti pakṣe
prathamaḥ pakṣa unmiṣathatīti, `putrapautrādi sādhāraṇo'patyaśabda' iti pakṣe tu dvitīyaḥ
pakṣa unmiṣatīti bhāvaḥ. taddhānyai iti. tasya=uktaprakārābhyāmaniṣṭotpādanasya
hāniḥ=nivṛttiḥ, tadarthamidamityarthaḥ. tathottaramiti.
`gotrādyūnyastriyā'mityuttarasūtramapi tathā yojyamityarthaḥ. tatrāpatyaśabdaḥ
putra eva rūḍha iti pakṣe aniṣṭaṃ prapañcayati–piturevetyādinā. aupagavādiñsyāditi.
`ata iñ ityanene'ti śeṣaḥ. aupagavādeva iñ syannatūpagoraṇityarthaḥ, tṛtīyasya upaguṃ
pratyapatyatvā'bhāvāditi bhāvaḥ. caturthe tvityataḥ pūrvam `upago'riti śeṣaḥ.
ajīvajjyeṣṭhe iti. jīvan jyeṣṭho yasyeti vigrahaḥ. jīvati tu jyeṣṭhe caturthasya
`bhrātari ca jyāyasī'ti yuvasaṃjñayā gotratvaṃ bādhyeteti bhāvaḥ. aupagaveḥ phagiti.
`yañiñoścenene'ti śeṣaḥ. ekoneti. ekonaśatātprakṛtibhyaḥ ekonaśataṃ pratyayā aniṣṭāḥ
syurityarthaḥ. athā'patyaśabdaḥ putrapautrādisādhāraṇa iti pakṣe aniṣṭaṃ prapañcayati–
pitāmahādīnāmapīti. mukhyapakṣatvaṃ tvasya bhāṣye pūrvapakṣasya nirākaraṇāt `apatyaṃ
pautraprabhṛti' iti sūtrasvarasācca bodhyam. iṣṭe siddhe'pīti.
tṛtīyādīnāmapyapatyatvena tatra `tasyāpatya'mityaṇo nirbādhatvāditi bhāvaḥ. tata iti.
iñantādityarthaḥ. aṣṭanavateriti. `prakṛtibhyaḥ' iti śeṣaḥ. aniṣṭapratyayāḥ
syuriti. `aṣṭanavati'riti śeṣaḥ. niyamārthamiti. yadyapyupagostṛtīyādiṣu
apatyapratyayavidhyarthatvameva prathamapakṣe, tathāpi gargāttṛtīyādiṣu vivakṣiteṣu
gotravihitagargādiyañā gāgryaśabdasyeṣṭasya siddhāvapi gargādiñi tataḥ phiñityevaṃ
pratyayaparamparāptaniṣṭā prāpnotīti niyamārthatvamapi prathamapakṣe'pyasya
sūtrasyeti bhāvaḥ. evamuttarasūtre'pyūhramiti. tatprakārastu uttarasūtre eva
vakṣyate. "apatyaṃ pautraprabhṛtī"ti sūtramapyatrānuguṇam. ādyapakṣe hi "apatyamivāpatya"miti gauṇī vṛttirāśrayaṇīyā syāt. amarastu sūtrabhāṣyādivirodhādupekṣya iti. taddhānyai iti. ādyapakṣe pratyayamālā nivṛttaye, anye tu svadvyūnaṅkhyebhyo'niṣṭotpattinivṛttaye ityarthaḥ. aupagavādiñsyāditi. tṛtīyasya upaguṃ prati anapatyatvāditi bhāvaḥ. evaṃ ca'sati sūtre asminpakṣe aupagavirityaniṣṭameva syāt "aupagava"itīṣṭaṃ tu na siddyatīti bodhyam. ajobajjyeṣṭhe iti. jīvajjyeṣṭhe jīvadūṃśye vā yuvasaṃjñāyāṃ satyāṃ gotrasaṃjñā neti bhāvaḥ. iṣṭe siddhe'pīti. asmin pakṣe aupagavasya yadapatyaṃ tadupayogapyapatyamiti upagoryadā pratyayaḥ tadā "aupagavaḥ" itīṣṭaṃ yadyapi siddyapi, tathāpyaupagavirityaniṣṭaṃ prāpnotītyarthaḥ. tata iti. iñantādityarthaḥ. phagiñoriti. phagantādiñ, iñantātphak, tadantātpunariñityādiparamparāyāṃ satyāmityarthaḥ. niyamārthamiti. nanvādyapakṣe tattatpitṛvācakādeva pratyayo, na tu mūlabhūtātsyāt, anantarāpatye mukhyasaṃbandhe caritārthasyā'ṇādergauṇasaṃbandhe'pi pravṛtteranyāyyatvāt. tathā caupagavāpatyena upagormukhyasaṃbandhā'bhāvādatrā'prāpte vidhyarthamevedaṃ sūtraṃ, na tu niyamārthamiti aupagavaśabdādapi pratyayo durvāra iti cedatrāhuḥ--gotre bodhanīye krameṇā'nekapratyayaprasaṅge eka evāpatyapratyayaḥ syāditi sūtrārthe kṛte aupagavaśabdasyāpatyapratyayāntatvātpunarapatyapratyayastato nopapadyate ityagatyā paramparāsambandhābhyupagamenopagoreva tadutpattiḥ, na tvaupagavaśabdāditi siddhimiṣṭamiti. atra kecivdyācakṣate---"ādyapakṣe pratyayaparamparāyāṃ prāptāyām "eko gotre"ityanenaikaḥ pratyayo vidhīyate. tathā caiko nāmaikajātīya ityarthaparyavasānānmūlaprakṛtertho'patyapratyayo'ṇādistajjātīya eva gotre bodhanīye tattatpitṛvācakādbhavati "aṇantādaṇ, iñantādiñ, yañantādyañiti. na caivamaṇiñoḥ paramparāyāṃ nivartitāyāmapyaupagava ityatrā'ṇpratyayaparamparā syāt, tathā gagrya ityādau yañādiparampareti vācyaṃ, satyāmapi tasyāmaniṣṭā'bhāvā"diti. taccintyaṃ. phagantātphaki "nāḍāyana"ityādāvaniṣṭaprasaṅgāditi dik. ūhramiti. "apatyaṃ pitureve"ti pakṣe caturthāpatyarūpe yūni vivakṣite "gotrādyūnī"ti niyamasūtre satyasati ca gotrapratyayāntādeva yuvapratyaya iti dvayoḥ paramparā, sā ceṣṭatvānna niyamena vyāvarttyate. pañcame tu yūni niyamā'bhāve trayāṇāṃ paramparā prasajyeta. ṣaṣṭhe tu caturṇāmityādi.
