parimāṇagrahaṇañca yatra nimittādarthāntare so'yamityabhedasambandhācchabdaḥ pravatrtate, tadupalakṣaṇārtha veditavyam. tena parimāṇavadarthāntarabhūteṣvapyunmānādiṣu prathamā bhavati. ghṛtam, palam, dīrgha kāṣṭham, śuklaḥ paṭaḥ, hasto muṣṭirvitastirityevamādi siddhaṃ bhavati. kuta etat? mātraśabdāt. sa hratra vyāptivacano gṛhrate, yathā-- kanyāmātraṃ varayati, brāāhṛṇamātraṃ bhojayatīti. tena parimāṇagrahaṇasyaivopalakṣaṇārthatā vijñāyate yadi tu yathā "payomātraṃ bhuṅkte" ityatra mātraśabdo niyamārthaḥ, tathehāpi niyamārtha eva syāt; tataśconmānādiṣu prathamā na syāt; tasya parimāṇādanyatvāt-- ukteṣvapyekatvādiṣu prathamā yathā syāditi.
vacanagrahaṇe tvasatyukteṣvekatvādiṣu prathamā na syāt. "anabhihite" 2.3.1 ityadhikārāt. nanu ca parigaṇanaṃ tatra kṛtam, tat kuto'yaṃ prasaṅgaḥ? naitadasti; pratyākhyātaṃ hi tatra parigaṇanam. tathā hi--rūḍhaḥ karma, bhīṣmādayo'pi karmaṇi, tatra karmāṇi, tatra karmaṇītyeva dvitīyā siddhā. kaṭaśabdādutpadyamānā dvitīyayā sāmānyakarmoktam, na viśeṣakarma. tatrāvaśyaṃ viśeṣo vaktavya iti bhīṣmādibhyo'pi viśeṣābhidhānārtha dvitīyā bhaviṣyati. atha vā-- kaṭa eva karma, tatsāmānādhakaraṇyāt bhīṣmādibhyo'pi dvitīyā bhaviṣyati; nārthaḥ parigaṇanena.
yatpunaridaṃ "tiṅakṛttaddhitasamāsaiḥ parisaṃkhyānam" 2.3.1 iti vṛttāvupanyasatm, tadebhirevābhidhānaṃ sambhavatīti sambhavapradarśanārthaparaṃ veditavyam. yadyapyekādibhirapi saṃkhyāśabdairektavādīnāmabhidhānaṃ sambhavati, tathā'pyabhihite'pi tairetkatvādāvarthe vacanagrahaṇāt yatnāt vibhaktyeti. tairapyabhidhānasya sambhavapradarśanārtha yatnaḥ kṛtaḥ.

jñānaśabde napuṃsakatvasya ca bhānātkathaṃ prātipadikārthasyodāharaṇānyetānītyata āha–
aliṅgā ityādi. `avyayādāpsupaḥ' iti sūtre `ābgrahaṇaṃ vyarthamaliṅgatvā'diti
bhāṣyoktarītyā'vyaye kasyāpi liṅgasyānupastha#itiriti prātipadikārthamātre
ityasya bhavatyavyayamudāharaṇam. kṛṣṇaśabde puṃstvasya śrīśabde strītvasya
jñānaśabde napuṃsakatvasya ca niyamena bhānamasti teṣāṃ niyataliṅgatvāt atasteṣu
liṅganāmapi prātipadikārthāntarbhāvātteṣāmapi prātipadikārthamātre
ityudāharaṇatvaṃ nirbādhamiti bhāvaḥ. yadyapi `kṛṣṇaḥ paṭaḥ' `kṛṣṇā paṭī' `kṛṣṇaṃ
vastra'mityādau kṛṣṇaśabdastriliṅgaḥ, tathāpi bhagavatpara evātra kṛṣṇaśabdo vivakṣita
iti bhāvaḥ. naca prātipadiktoktārthe kiṃ prathamayeti vācyam,
ekatvādisaṃkhyābodhārthatvāt. nacā'vyayātprathamotpatteḥ phalā'bhāvaḥ `avyayādāpsupa'
iti luko'vaśyaṃ pravṛtteriti vācyaṃ, padatvārthaṃ subutpatterāvaśyakatvāt.

suvarṇāścatvāraḥ pañca vāpi prakīrtitam. paladvayaṃ tu prasṛtaṃ, dviguṇaṃ kuḍabaṃ
matam. caturbhiḥ kuḍavaiḥ prasthaḥ, prasthāścatvāra āḍhakaḥ. āḍhakaistaiścaturbhistu
droṇa ityabhidhīyate. kumbho droṇadvayaṃ śūrpaḥ, khārī droṇāstu ṣoḍaśa. ' #iti

prātipadikārthamātre ityeva siddham. yadi tu `astriyāmāḍhakadroṇau' iti
dvilihgatā, tarhi liṅgamātrādhikye ityeva siddhaṃ. ta\ufffdtka
parimāṇagrahaṇeneti cettatrāha–pratyayārthe parimāṇe iti. na hi droṇatvena rūpema
parimāṇaviśeṣavācidroṇaśabdātsvārthe prathamāvibhaktiriṣyate, yena
prātipadikārthaṃmātre ityanena gatārthatā syāt. kiṃ tu droṇatvena parimāṇavācino
droṇaśabdātparimāṇatvasāmānyarūpeṇa droṇaparimāṇe vivakṣite prathamā
vibhaktirvidhīyate. tataśca pratyayārthe parimāṇasāmānye
droṇaśabdārthātbhakaprakṛtyarthaḥ parimāṇaviśeṣaḥ
sāmānyaviśeṣātmakā'bhedasaṃsargeṇānveti. parimāṇasāmānyātmakapratyayārthastu

vyākhyāne'pi ekadvibahuśabdeṣvekatvadvitvabahutvānāṃ kevalānāṃ

vakṣyamāṇaḥ saṅgacchate. yadi tu sarvatraiva śābdabodhaprayuktaṃ vailakṣaṇyaṃ svīkriyate
tarhi `bādhanārtaṃ kṛtaṃ bhave'diti samādhānasyā'ṇo bādhanārthaminipratyayavidhānamiti
samādhānasya ca vaiyathryāpatteriti. nanu kvacit pañcakaṃ prātipadikārthaḥ,
kvacittrikaṃ, kvaciddvikaṃ prātipadikārtha ityādi vyavahyiyate. ta ete pakṣāḥ
keṣāmamimatāḥ, kathaṃ vā'mīṣāmupapattiriti cet. atra vyācakhyuḥ—
svārthadravyaliṅgasaṅkhyākārakātmakaḥ pañcakaṃ prātipadikārthaḥ, dhi madhvityādau
vināpi vibhakiṃ?ta prātipadikādeva tāvatāmarthānāṃ pratīteḥ. vṛkṣau vṛkṣāḥ vakṣaṃ
vṛkṣeṇetyādau yadyapi vibhaktyanvaye'pi pratīyante neyatā parkṛtyarthatvahāniḥ,
dyotakatvenaivopayogāditi bhāṣyakāro manyate. āditaścatuṣkamiti kaiyaṭaḥ. `tatropapadaṃ
saptamīsthaṃ'mityatra catuṣkapakṣe, pañcakapakṣe vā kārakaṃ prātipadikārtha
ityabhidhānāt. āditastrikamiti vṛttikāraḥ. anvayavyatirekābhyāṃ
saṅkhyākārakādervibhaktyarthatvaniścayāt. yadyapi `dadhi'`madhu'ityādau vināpi
