vidhirityanekavibhaktayantasamāsalābhārtham. padasyetyuktau tu `upapadamatiṅ'
ityādāvevāsyopasthitiḥ syādityāhuḥ. sūtre samarthaśabdo lākṣaṇika iti
dhvanayannāha–samarthāśrita iti. samartheti kim?. paśyati kṛṣṇaṃ, śrito
devadattamityādau kṛṣṇaśrita ityādi samāso mā bhūt. yathā vastramupagorapatyaṃ
caitrasyetyatra `tasyāpatyam' ityupaguśabdādaṇmā bhūditi. kvacittu
sāpekṣatve'pi bhāṣyaprāmāṇyādvṛttiraṅgīkriyate. tadyathā—`kimodanaḥ
śālīnām'. keṣāṃ śālīnāmodana ityarthaḥ. saktvāḍhakamāpaṇīyānām'. āpaṇīyānāṃ
saktūnāmāḍhakamityarthaḥ. `kṛto bhavānpāṭaliputrakaḥ'. dve pāṭaliputre, tatra
kasmātpāṭaliputrādbhavānāgata ityarthaḥ. `ropadhetoḥ prācām' iti vuñ.

samarthaḥ padavidhiḥ 567, 2.1.1 samarthaḥ padavidhiḥ. sāmathryaṃ ca dvividhaṃ--vyapekṣālakṣaṇamekārthībhāvalakṣaṇaṃ ceti. tatra svārthaparyavasāyinā padānāmākāṅkṣādivaśādyaḥ parasparasaṃbandhaḥ sā vyapekṣā. saiva vākye rājñaḥ puruṣa ityādau. tatpa vyapekṣāyāṃ satyāṃ yo yaḥ saṃnihito yogyaśca tena tena saṃbandho'bhyupeyate. yathā rājñaḥ puruṣo'()āśca. rājño devadattasya ca puruṣa iti. ekarthībhāvastu rājapuruṣa ityādivṛttāveva. sa ca prākriyādaśāyāṃ pṛthagarthatvena prathamagṛhītasya viśiṣṭaikārthatvarūpaḥ. ataeva rājapuruṣa ityatra rājñi ṛddhasyeti viśeṣaṇaṃ nānveti, padārthaikadeśatvāt. na caivaṃ devadattasya gurukulamityādāvananvayāpattiḥ, tatrāpi devadattottaraṣaṣṭha()rthasya guruṇā'nvayāditi vācyam. devadattasya pradhānībhūtakulainaivānvayāt. saṃbandhastūpasthitagurudvāraka eva ṣaṣṭha()rtho, na tu taditaraḥ. uktaṃ ca---"samudāyena sambandho yeṣāṃ gurukulādinā. saṃspṛśyavayavāṃste tu yujyante tadvatā saha". iti. yadvā---sasaṃbandhikapadārthasyaikadeśatve'pi bhavatyeva viśeṣaṇānvayaḥ. uktaṃ ca---"saṃbandhiśabdaḥ sāpekṣo nityaṃ sarvaḥ samasyate. vākyavatsā vyapekṣā hi vṛttāvapi na hīyate" iti. nanvevaṃ rājño'pi nityasāpekṣatvādeśatve'pi ṛddhasyeti viśeṣaṇenānvayo'stacu. maivam. rājña īśiturīśitavyaṃ prati sākāṅkṣatve'pi ṛddhaṃ pratyanākāṅkṣatvāt. nanu vākye klṛptayaivā'vayavaśaktyopapattau viśiṣṭarthaviṣayaṃ śaktyantarameva māstu. satyam---"bahūnāṃ vṛttidharmāṇāṃ vacanaireva sādhane. syānmadadgauravaṃ tasmādekārthībhāva āsthitaḥ. cakārādiniṣedho'tha bahuvyutpattibhañjanam. kartavyaṃ te, nyāyasiddhaṃ tvasmākaṃ taditi sthitam". tathāhi---dhavakhadirāviti vṛttyaiva krīḍīkṛtārthatvāccakāro na prayujyate, tathā citragvādau yatpadam. tvayā tu vacanaṃ kartavyam. nirūḍhalakṣaṇā tu śaktito nātīva bhidyate. kiṃca prāptamudakaṃ yamiti vyaste samīcīnamudakamiti viśeṣaṇatsamaste'pi udakaviśeṣaṇaprayogaḥ[samāsaghaṭava padārthānāṃ]prāptaḥ, sa ca "vṛttasya viśeṣaṇayogo na" iti vacanenaiva vāraṇīyaḥ, "nāmārthayorabhedānvayaḥ", "pratyayārthaḥ pradhānamiti vyutpattityāgaśca.
