jātyākhyāmekasminbahuvacanamanyatarasyām. , 1.2.58 "jātirnāmāyameko'rthaḥ ityādinā sūtrārambhasya prayojanamāha. nanu jāteḥ saṃkhyā na vidyate? tasyā dravyadharmatvāt. yadyapi vaiśeṣikasiddhāntaprasiddhā guṇapadārthasaṃgṛhītā yā saṃkhyā sā na vidyate; tathāpi "bhedakā guṇāḥ" ityasmaddarśane" bhedamātrā yā saṃkhyā sā vidyata evetyadoṣaḥ. "jāterākhyā" iti. ākhyānamākhyā = pratyāyanam. "devadattaḥ" iti. devadattaśabdo yadṛcchāśabdaḥ. nānenaikaṃ vastvanekavyaktyanugatamabhidhīyate. anekavyaktyādhārā hi jātiḥ. tato na devadattatvaṃ nāma jātirastīti na bhavatyatra bahuvadbhāvaḥ. nanu cātrāvasthābhedenānekādhāraṃ devadattatvamasti, naitadasti; evaṃ hi jātigrahaṇamanarthakaṃ syāt, sarvatra jāteḥ sambhavāt. tasmājjātigrahaṇasāmathryālloke ye jātiśabdāḥ, pratītāḥ, tadarthā evātra jātiśabdena vivakṣitā iti vijñāyate, na ca devadattaśabdo loke jātiśabdaḥ pratītaḥ.
