ityāha-- "śabdena" ityādi. śabdenoccāritenārthaḥ kāryopayogitayā gamyate, na śabda-
svarūpam. tathā hi-- gaurupalabhyatamityukte'rthamevopalabdhumādriyate, na śabdasvarūpam; vyākaraṇe tu pratyayavidhānādikāryamarthasya na sambhavati; tena saha śabdasya paurvāparyābhāvāt. na cārthād vihitena pratyayena kaścit prakṛtopayogaḥ. tena "agnerḍhak" (4.2.

iti guṇavṛddhī liṅgam. vidhyantaraśeṣabhūtā vā; yathā-- "vipratiṣedhe paraṃ kāryam" (kāta.pa.67) iti parasya vidhyantarasya śeṣabhāvamāpadyate. na vāsyā liṅgaṃ vidhyantaraśeṣabhāvo
vā vidyata iti saṃjñāsūtramidam" iti pratipannāḥ. yadyapi vṛttau saṃjñāśabdo
noccārinaḥ, tathāpi "svameva rūpaṃ śabdasya grāhram" ityevaṃ brāuvatā vṛttikāreṇa saṃjñaivetyākhyātaṃ bhavati. agniśabdādau śabdāntaraiḥ sādhāraṇamapi rūpamasti śabdatvādi, asādhāraṇamapi agniśabdatvādi, tatra sādhāraṇarūpavyudāsenāsādhāraṇasyāgniśabdatvādi-
rūpasya parigrahārthaṃ "svam" grahaṇam. taddhi svameva tasya rūm, itarat punaḥ parasyāpi. pratīti pratyanupadeśācchabdasya svarūpamevāsannam, nārthaḥ; viparyayāt, aheyatvā-
cca, tannityasambandhitvācca. tathā hranukaraṇaśabdā hrarthaṃ jahati, na tu svarūpam. asādhāraṇañca rūpamrthastu sādhāraṇaḥ; śabdāntarairapi pratyāyamānatvāt.
tadevamāsannatvānnityasambadhitvādasādhāraṇatvācca rūpameva śabdasya svam,
nārthaḥ. tataśca svagrahaṇādeva rūpaparigrahe siddhe vyākaraṇe rūpavadartho'pyaṅgīkriyata iti jñāpanārthaṃ rūpagrahaṇam. tena-- "arthavad()grahaṇena nānarthakasya" (vyā.pa.1) ityetadupapannaṃ bhavati. śabdānuśāsananaprastāvādeva ca śabdasyeti siddhe śabdagrahaṇam-- yatra śabdaparo nirdeśastatra svarūpaṃ gṛhrate, nārthaparo nirdeśa iti jñāpanārtham. tena "
sve puṣaḥ" 3.4.40 ityatra svarūpasya grahaṇaṃ na bhavati. arthaparatvaṃ tu nirdeśasyāvicchinnapāramparyādācāryopadeśād()vijñāyate.
"āgneyam" iti. agnirdevatā'syetyatrārthe ḍhak.
"auda()iātkam" iti. ātrāpyuda()iātā saṃskṛtamityatrārthe ḍhak. "uda()iāto-
'nyatarasyām" 4.2.18 ityatra "dadhnaṣṭhak" 4.2.17 ityasyānuvatteḥ, "isusu-
ktāntātkaḥ" 7.3.51 iti ṭhakaḥ kādeśaḥ.
"ghagrahaṇeṣu" ityādi. yadi ghuprabhṛtirapi saṃjñāśabda svarūpasya grāhakaḥ
syāt "upasarge ghoḥ kiḥ" 3.2.92 ityatra yadyapi dhātvadhikārastathāpi ghugrahaṇād ghuśabdāt kipratyayaḥ syāt. upasargagrahaṇaṃ tu prādyupalakṣaṇārtha syāt. yathā-- "añ nāsikāyāḥ saṃjñāyāṃ, nasañcāsthūlāt" 5.4.118 "upasargācca" 5.4.119 ityatra. kumārīgha ityatra ca gha iti saṃjñāśabdena svarūpapratyāyane sati "gharūpakalpa" 6.4.43
ityādina ghaśabde parato hyasvatvaṃ prasajyeta.
nanu ca saṃjñāvidhānasāmathryāt saṃjñāyāḥ svarūpagrahaṇaṃ na bhavati, saṃjñā hi saṃjñinaḥ pratyāyanārthā kriyate; yadi saṃjñāśabdo'pi svarūpaṃ pratyāyayet saṃjñāvidhānamanarthakaṃ syāt, naitadasti; saṃjñāvidānasāmathryāddhi saṃjñinaṃ pratyāyayet, paribhāṣāvidhānasāmathryācca svarūpam. tasmāt pratiṣedhaḥ katrtavyaḥ? na katrtavyaḥ,
jñāpakāt saṃjñāśabdo rūpasya grāhako na bhaviṣyati. yadayaṃ "ṣṇāntā ṣaṭ" 1.4.24
iti ṣakārāntāyāḥ saṃkhyāyāḥ ṣaṭsaṃjñāṃ vidadhāti,tajjñāpayati- saṃjñāśabdaḥ svarūpasya grāhako na bhavatīti; anyathā hi "ṣa()ḍbhyo luk" 7.1.22 ityatra ṣaṭśabdena
svarūpasya pratyāyitatvāt tato'pi lug bhavatīti ṣakārantāyāyaḥ saṃkhyāyāḥ ṣaḍiti
saṃjñā na kuryāt. ṣaṭśabdo hi ṣakārāntā saṃkhyā, nānyā, satyametat; tathāpi yeṣāṃ
jñāpakadvāreṇārthapratipattau pratipattigauravaṃ syāt, tān pratitatparihārāyayāśabda-
saṃjñeti pratiṣedhaḥ kṛtaḥ. śabdagrahaṇam- vyākaraṇe yā saṃjñā tasyā eva pratiṣedho na
laukikyā iti pradarśanārtham.
"sittdaviśeṣāṇām" ityādi. yatra viśeṣāṇāṃ grahaṇamiṣyate tatra sakāra itsaṃjñakaḥ katrtavyaḥ "vṛkṣasya,mṛgasiti.
