t"5.4.106iti ṭac samāsāntaḥ syāt; samāsāntavidheranityatvānna bhaviṣyati. anityatvaṃ ṣaṣṭhe jñāpayiṣyate. atha "coḥ kuḥ" (8.2.30) iti kutvaṃ kasmānna bhavati? "aya-
smayādīni cchandasi" 1.4.20 iti bhasañjñakatvāt. ādiśabdasya prakāravācitvādaiccha-

viśeṣeṇacopadiṣṭaḥ. "vṛdhu vṛddhau" (dhā.pā.759) ityataḥ ktinpratyayaḥ "striyāṃ
ktin"3.3.94 iti, "jhaṣastathordho'dhaḥ"8.2.40 iti dhatvam, "jhalāṃ jaś jhaśi" (8.4.
53)iti dhakārasya dakāraḥ. ādaico'pyakṣarasamāmnāya upadeśāt. aico'kṣarasamāmnāya upadeśaḥ, nākārasyeti cet? avarṇajāterupadeśāt so'pi gṛhrata ityadoṣaḥ. athāpyakāravyakterupadeśaḥ? evamapyadoṣaḥ. "aṇuditsavarṇasya cāpratyayaḥ"1.1.68 ityakāreṇa gṛhramāṇenākārasyāpi grahaṇāt. prayoganiyamārthamapyetannārhati bhavituma. prayoganiyamārthe
hretasmin? "sici vṛddhiḥ" 7.2.1 mṛjervṛddhiḥ" 7.2.114 ityādāvanādaicparasya vṛddhiśabdasya prayogo nopapadyate. kathaṃ hi nāma svayameva niyamaṃ kṛtvā tamanādaicparaṃ

anyastu prayoganiyamārthametanna bhavatīti pratipādayitumāha- naha ca prayoganiyamā-
rthamārabhyata iti. nanu cāyaṃ prayoganiyamārthamevārabhyate "te prāga dhātoḥ" (1.4.80) iti? te gatyapasargasañjñakā dhātoḥ prāgeva prayoktavyāḥ iti pareṇa codite parihāramāha- "
pratyākhyāyate sa yogaḥ, na vā, tathāniṣṭadarśanāt" iti. na hi prapacatīti prayoktavye kaścit pacati pra iti prayuṅkate. athāpi na pratyākhyāyeta, evamapi na doṣaḥ, yataḥ
sañjñāniyamo'yaṃ na prayoganiyamaḥ, te prādayo dhātoḥ prāk prayujyamānā eva gatyupasa-rgasañjñakā bhavantīti. athāpi prayoganiyamārthaṃ syāt, evamapi na doṣaḥ, laukikānāṃ
śabdānāmarthe prayuktānāṃ prayoganiyama ārabhyate, ādaicchabdaśca laukikaḥ, tasya kiṃ
prayoganiyamārthena vacaneneti? tatra yaduktaṃ "pratyākhāyāyate sa yogaḥ" iti, tadayuktam. na hi sārthakasya pratyākhyānaṃ yuktam. nirarthakaḥ sa iti cet? atrāpyanarthakatvāśaṅkāprasaṅgaḥ. yadi hranarthakānyapi kānicit sūtrāṇi praṇītavān sūtrakāra ityeṣo'-
dhyavasāyaḥ syāt. tasmāta tasya prāmāṇyamabhyupagacchatā sarvaṃ tatpraṇītaṃ yena kenacit prakāreṇa sārthakamabhyupeyam. yo'pi sañjñāniyamapakṣamāśritya parihāra uktaḥ, so'pi vṛttyā virudhyate. "te gatyupasargasañjñakā dhātoḥ prāk prayoktavyāḥ" ityanena
hi vṛttigranthena prayoganiyama evāśrita iti spaṣṭamevākhyātam. na ca vṛtiṃ()ta
vyākhyātumudyatasya tadviruddhaṃ vyākhyānaṃ yujyate kartuma.
yadapyuktaṃ "laukikānāṃ śabdānām" ityādi, tadapi na prayoganiyamārthatā-
śaṅkāpanodāyālam. tathā hi "vibhāṣā supo bahuc purastātu5.3.68, "avyayasarva-
nāmnāmakac prāk ṭeḥ" 5.3.71, "kṛñcānuprayujyate liṭi" 3.1.40 ityalaukikānāmapi bahujādīnaṃ śāstre prayoganiyamo dṛśyate, tatra bhavitavyamevāśaṅkyā, kimetat
prayoganiyamārtham, athānyārthamityalamatiprasaṅgena. tasmāt pūrvokta eva parīhāro
yuktaḥ.
ādeśārthamapyetacchakyate na vijñātum. yadi hrādaicāmanena vṛddhiśabda ādeśo
vidhīyeta, ya ete nirdeśāḥ "yāti vāti drāti psāti" 8.4.17 iti, yaśca "rāyo hali"7.2.85 iti, yaśca "nāvo dvigoḥ" 5.4.99 iti, te nopapadyeran. atha vṛddhiśabda-
syādaica ādiśyeran(), evamapi "id()vṛddhau"6.3.27, "vṛddhinimittasya ca taddhitasya" 6.3.38ityevamādayo nirdeśā na sambhaveyuḥ. ata evāgamārthamapyetannopapadyate. na
hrādaicāṃ vṛddhiśabda āgame vihite tasya vā teṣu pūrvoktā nirdeśā upapadyante.
anyastvāha- ādeśavidhāne sthānyādeśasambandhe ṣaṣṭha()ā bhavitavyam, āgamavidhānepyavayavāvayavisambandhe, na ceha ṣaṣṭhī vidyate, tasmāt ṣaṣṭha()ā abhāvānnedamādeśārtham, nāpyāgamārtham iti. etaccāsamyak. vinā'pi ṣaṣṭha()ā "halṅyāgbhyo dīrghāt sutisyapṛktaṃ hal" 6.1.66, "anite"8.4.19, "antaḥ"8.4.19, "ubhau sābhyāsasya"
8.4.20 ityāveśavidhānadarśanāt. āgamavidhānasyāpi "na yvābhyāṃ padāntābhyāṃ pūrvau tu tābhyāmaic" 7.3.3 iti ṣaṣṭhīmantareṇāpi darśanāt viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvaprasiddhyarthamapyetann sambhāvyate. tathā hi sambhavavyabhicāre ca sati viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvo bhavati,
nīlotpalavat. na cehādaicāṃ vṛddhiśabde tasya vā teṣu sambhavaḥ. nanu ca yathotpalaśabdaḥsarvatrotpalārthe vartamāno nīlaśabdenārthāntarādvayavacchidyata iti vyavacchidyamāno viśeṣyo bhavati, nīlaśabdastu vyavacchindan viśeṣaṇam, tathānayorapabi yo vayavacchedyaḥ sa
viśeṣyo bhavati, yastu vyavacchedakaḥ sa viśeṣaṇamiti? naitadasti. ubhayorhi sārthakatve
satyetadupapadyate, nīlotpalaśabdavat. na cādaico'rthavantaḥ. bhavatu nāmānayorviśeṣaṇaviśe-
ṣyabhāvaḥ, tathāpi naitatsiddhyarthamidaṃ yuktam; niṣprayojanatvāt, tatpunaḥ prakṛtānupayogitvāt. śabdānuśāsane hi śāstre prakṛte yagnāma śabdasaṃskārānupayogivacanaṃ
tatsarvamaprayojanam. śabdasaṃskārānupayogitvaṃ tvetatpratipaditena viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvenavṛddhiśabdasyādaicāṃ vā svaraviśeṣasya vā rupaviśeṣasya vā saṃskārasyāsiddheḥ. viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāva eva teṣāṃ saṃskāra iti cet? yadyevam, atyalpamidamucyate"vṛddhirādaic" 1.1.1iti. nīlotpalamityadpi hi vaktavyam, nīlotpalādiśabdānāṃ viśeṣaṇaviśeṣyabhāvaprasiddhaye. na coktam, ato naiṣa saṃskāro'bhimata iti nāsya tādathryaṃ sambhāvyate.
nanu tulyavibhaktikānāṃ tadguṇasamādhyāropo'pi dṛṣṭaḥ, tadyathā "siṃho māṇavakaḥ" iti, tasmāt tadarthametadbhaviṣyatīti yatpakṣāntarameke parikalpayāmbabhūvuḥ, tadarthama-
pyetanna bhavati, tadguṇasamādhyāropasya sato'pyatra prakṛtānupayogitvenānarthakatvāt. tasmāt pāriśeṣyāt sañjñāsañjñisambandhārthamevaitadityālocyāha-"vṛddhiśabdaḥ
sañjñātvena" ityādi. bhavatu nāma pariśeṣyāttadartham. etat kuto labhyate? vṛddhi-
śabdaḥ sañjñā, ādaicaḥ sañjñinaḥ iti. viparyayaḥ kasmānna bhavati,ādaicaḥ sañjñā, vṛddhiśabdaḥ sañjñī iti? nārhati viparyayo bhavitum. tathā hi, laghvarthatvāt sañjñākaraṇasya, yasminnuccāryamāṇe pradeśeṣu lāghavaṃ bhavati tasya sañjñārthatvena bhāvyam. vṛddhiśabde ca vibhaktike'pyuccāryamāṇe lāghavaṃ bhavati, nādaikṣu; yasmād()vṛddhiśabda
uccāryamāṇe catastro mātrā bhavanti, ādaikṣu tu pañca. na cādaicāṃ pratyekaṃ
sañjñābhāvāllāghavaṃ bhavatīti śakyaṃ parikalpayitum, prayojanaviśeṣamantareṇaikasthāne-
sañjñāvidhānasya niṣphalatvāt. kiñcāvartibhyaḥ sañjñā bhavanti. vṛddhiśabdaścāvartate, nādaicchabdaḥ tasmānna bhavati viparyayaḥ "vṛddhiśabdaḥ" iti. śabdagrahaṇamarthavyavacche-
dārtham. asati hi tasmin śabdādarthāvagaterarthasyaiva sañjñātvaṃ vijñāyeta. yadyapi prāgeva sañjñā vihitā, tathāpi śiṣyapraśiṣyaprabandhādyuparamādvidhīyata itivartamāna
prayatven nirdeśaḥ. yatra samudāsya kāryamicchati tatra ubhepadagrahaṇaṃ karoti, yathā "ubhe
abhyastam" 6.1.5 iti, anvarthāṃ vā mahatīṃ sañjñām, "halo'ntarāḥ saṃyogaḥ"1.1.7 iti. tatra hi mahatī sañjñaivamarthā kriyate, samudāyasyaiṣā sañjñāyathā syāditi.
etaccottaratra vyaktīkariṣyāmaḥ. iha tu na kiñcittathāvidhaṃ vacanamasti yataḥ samudāyasyai-
ṣā sañjñā syāt. tasmādekaikasyaiṣā sañjñeti manasi kṛtvāha "pratyekakam" iti.
nanu cehāpi lāghavārthamekākṣarāyāṃ sañjñāyāṃ kartavyāyāṃ vṛddhiriti mahatyāḥ
sañjñāyāḥkaraṇaṃ samudāyasya sañjñā yathā syādityevamartham? naitadasti. maṅgalārthatvā-
dasyāḥ sañjñāyāḥ. ata evāsyāḥ prāguccāraṇam. anyathā sañjñāyāḥ sataḥ kāryiṇaḥ
kāryeṇa bhavitavyamiti, yathā "adeṅguṇaḥ"1.1.2 ityādau pūrvasañjñīnirdiṣṭa-,
tathehāpi nirdiśet. ākārasya guṇāntarayuktayoścaicoḥ pratyāhāre'sanniveśānnāmī varṇā iti kasyacinmandadhiyo bhrāntiḥ syāt, atastannirākaraṇāyāha-"varṇānām"
ityādi. pratyāsattestadbhāvitānāmevaiṣāṃ sañjñā syāditi kasyacidviparyayaḥ
syāt, atastamapākartumāha-"sāmānyena" iti. vyāptenryāyādityabhiprāyaḥ.
sāmānyenetyasyārthaṃ vispaṣṭīkartumāha- "tadbhāvitanām" ityādi. te tadbhāvitāḥ
ye vṛddhiśabdenotpāditāḥ, tato'nye'tadbhāvitāḥ. āditi taparakaraṇam-"taparastatkālasya"1.1.69 iti guṇāntarabhinnānāmapi tulyakālānāṃ grahaṇārthaṃ vā syāt, bhinna-
kālānāṃ grahaṇanivṛttyarthaṃ vā? tatr pūrvaḥ pakṣastāvannopapadyate; abhedakatvādihodāttādīnāṃ śāstre guṇānāma. kuta etat? "luṅalaṅalṛṅakṣvaḍudāttaḥ"6.4.71 ityudāttagrahaṇāt, anyathā hrudāttaguṇayuktamevāṭamuccārayet. dvitīyo'pi nopapadyate.
yadi hrākāraḥ savarṇānāṃ grāhakaḥ syāt, tatastena bhinnakālasyāpyavarṇasya grahaṇe sati tasyāpi sañjñā mā bhūditi bhinnakālānāṃ grahaṇanivṛttyarthaṃ taparakaraṇamupapadyate. na
cāsau savarṇānāṃ grāhakaḥ, anaṇtvāt, tasya punarakṣarasamāmnāye'sanniveśāt. tasmādanarthakaṃ taparakaraṇam. tato na kartavyamevetyata āha- "taparakaraṇam" ityādi. ecorarthaḥ prayojanaṃ
yasay tat tathoktam. nanu ca jātau padārthe plutasyāpi grahaṇaṃ bhavati, tatrāpyavarṇajāteḥ samavayāt, tatrāsati taparakaraṇe tasyāpi sañjñā syat, tasmāt tannivṛttaya taparakaraṇaṃ bhavadākārārthamapyupapadyata eva, tatkimucyate "ejartham" iti? evaṃ manyate-
jātipakṣasamāśrayaṇe'pi hi dīrghoccāraṇasāmathryād()dvimātrā evāvarṇavyaktayaḥ
samāśritā iti gamyate, itarathā hi lāghavārtham? "ad()" ityevābhidadhyāt. na ca hyasvanivṛttyarthaṃ dīrghoccāraṇamiti śakyate parikalpayitum, dīrghoccāraṇe'pi hyasva-
grahaṇaṃ prāpnotyeva, tatrāpyavarṇajāteḥ sambhavāditi. na cāsandehārtham "āt" ityuktam, varṇāntarāsādhāraṇatvāt, asaṃhitayā vā sandehābhāvāditi. nanu ca "taparastatkāla-
sya" 1.1.69ityatra taḥ paro yasmāditi bahuvrīhirāśritaḥ, na cātraic taparaḥ, tatkathaṃ taparakaraṇamaijarthaṃ bhavatītyata āha- "tāvapi parastaparaḥ" iti. na kevalaṃ taḥ paro yasmāt sa tapara
iti, api tu tādapi yaḥ paraḥ so'pi tapara iti apiśabdena darśayati. etaduktaṃ bhavati, na
kevalaṃ bahuvrīhireva tatrāśrīyate, kiṃ tarhi? pañcamītatpuruṣo'pi. yatā caitadubhayamā-
śrīyate tathā tatraivopapādayiṣyāmaḥ. iti karaṇo hetau yata evaṃ tādapi parastaparaḥ, tena taparakaraṇamaijarthamityarthaḥ."khaṭvaiḍakādiṣu" ityādinā tadevaijarthatvaṃ taparakaraṇasya spaṣṭīkaroti.
vṛkṣa elakā "vṛkṣailakā". akriyamāṇe hratra taparakaraṇe trimātrikasyākāraikārasamudāya
syasthāne vṛddhireci"6.1.85 iti vṛddhirāntaratamyāt trimātrika evaikāraḥ syātyadi tasyāpi vṛddhisañjñā syāt. khaṭvā odanaṃ khaṭvaudanam, khaṭvā elakā khaṭvailakā ityatrāpi pūrvottarasamudāyayoścaturmātrāyoścaturmātrāvakāraikārau syātām,tanmā
bhūdeṣa doṣa iti trimātracaturmātrāṇāmaicāṃ vṛddhisañjñānivṛttaye taparakaraṇaṃ kriyate. ā()ālāyanaḥ, aitikāyanaḥ" iti. a()āletikaśabdābhyāṃ "naḍādibhyaḥ phak()" 4.1.99,

ścaturthopanyāsaḥ? kecidāhuḥ- vaddhinimittabhedāt, ādyayorudāharaṇayoḥ kittaddhito
vṛddhernimattam, tṛtīye'pi ṇit, tacurthe'pi ñit iti. etaccāyuktam. tathā hi "iko guṇavṛddhī" 1.1.3 ityatra"akārṣīt" ityudāhmatya "ahārṣīn" ityudāhmatam", na ca tatra vṛddhinimittabhedo'sti. tathā "na dhātulopa ārdhadhātuke" 1.1.4 ityatra
loluvaḥ ityudāhmatya "popuvaḥ, marīmṛjaḥ" ityadhikodāharaṇopanyāsaḥ kṛtaḥ. na ca tatra lopanimittabhedaḥ; pratiṣedhanimittabhedo vā adhikodāharaṇopanyāsasya heturvidyate. prāyeṇā-
nyaṣvepi ca sāmānyalakṣaṇeṣu vināpi nimittabhedānādhikodāharaṇopanyāsa upalabhyate.
yo'pyāha "opagava ityanenaica aukārasya viṣaye darśite'pi svarabhedādaupamanyava
ityetadadhikamudāharaṇamupanyastam" iti, tasyāpi tadayuktam, ata evānantaroktāddhetorveditavyam.. yadi nimittabhedaḥ, svarabhedo vā sarvatrādhikodāharaṇopanyāso veditavyaḥ. "śālīyaḥ, mālīyaḥ" iti. atadbhāvitasyodāharaṇe. atra hi vṛddhisañjñāyāṃ vṛddhiryasyā
cāmādistadvṛddham" 1.1.72 iti vṛddhasañjñāphaṃ chapratyayopanyāsastasyā eva phalabhūtāyā abhivyaktyarthaḥ. vṛddhasañjñāyāṃ hi satyāṃ " vṛddhācchaḥ" 4.2.113 iti jātādāvarthe cho vidhīyate. aikāraukārayostvatadbhāvitayorudāharaṇaṃ nātra darśitam, etadanusarasāra-
ṇaiva gamyamānatvāt. ākārasyātadbhāvitasya vṛddhisañjñāyāḥ kārye darśite, tayorapi tadeva kāryamiti tanmukhenaiva gamyata eva. ke punasatyorudāharaṇe? "raimayam, naumayam" iti.
ātraikāraukārayorvṛddhisañjñāyāṃ satyāṃ pūrvavad()vṛddhasañjñā. tasyāṃ ca satyāṃ
rāyo vikāraḥ, nāvo vikāra iti "nityaṃ vṛddhaśarādibhyaḥ" 4.3.142 iti mayaḍ()bhavati.

pāṇinīyāṣṭādhyāyyāmidamādimaṃ sūtraṃ, tathāpi nedamādāvupanyastam, asya sūtrasya
taparakaraṇena pratyāhāragarbhitatvena
grahaṇakaśāstraniyamārthataparasūtrapratyāhārasūtrapravṛttyuttarapravṛttikatayā
pratyāharaśāstraprapañcanirūpaṇātprāgupanyāsanarhatvāt. na ca sūtrakṛtā ayameva
pāṭhakamaḥ kuto nādriyata iti vācyam. svatantrecchasya maharṣerniyantumaśakyatvāt.
ācca aicceti samāhāradvandvaḥ. `dvandvāccudaṣahāntāt' iti samāsāntastu na, ata
eva nirdeśena samāsāntavidheranityatvāt. `coḥ kuḥ' iti padānte vihitaṃ kutvamapi na.
`ayasmayādīni chandasi' iti bhatvāt. `vṛddhirādaijadeṅa' iti saṃhitāpāṭhapakṣe cakārasya
`jhalāṃ jaśo'nte' iti padānte vihitajaśtvaṃ tu bhavatyeva, `ubhayasaṃjñānyapi chandasi
dṛśyante' iti vacanāt , `chandovatsūtrāṇi bhavanti' iti chāndasavidhīnāṃ sūtreṣvapi
pravṛtteḥ. nacaivamapi padatvātkutvaṃ bhatvājjaśtvā'bhāvaśca kuto na syāditi
vācyam, `chandasi dṛṣṭānuvidhiḥ' iti vacanādityalam.ācca aiccetītaretarayogadvandvo
