gaura गौर

Definition: A species of ox (Bos gaurus), is frequently mentioned with the Gavaya from the Rigveda onwards. As the Vājasaneyi Samhitā expressly mentions wild (āraηya) Gaúras, they must usually have been tame. The female, Gaurī, is also often referred to. The compound term Gaura-mrga (‘ the Gaura wild beast ’) is sometimes met with.
