mathu | मथु (थू) रा [मथ्-उ-ऊ-रच्] N. of an ancient town situated on the right bank of the Yamunā, the birth-place of Kṛiṣṇa and the scene of his amours and exploits; it is one of the seven sacred cities in India (see अवन्ति), and is, to this day, the favourite resort of thousands of devotees. It is said to have been founded by Śatrughna; निर्ममे निर्ममो$र्थेषु मथुरां मधुराकृतिः R.15.28; कलिन्दकन्या मथुरां गता$पि गङ्गोर्मिसंसक्तजलेव भाति 6.48. -Comp. -ईशः, -नाथः epithets of Kṛiṣṇa. |
