jya iṣṭhineya Denotes, in combination with Jyestha, the eldest,’ a ‘son of the father’s first wife’ (jyesthā), in the Brāhmanas. ājya See Ghrta ketu vajya ('descendant of Vāja’) is mentioned as a teacher in the Vamśa Brāhmana. daśapuruṣaṃrājya Occurring in the śatapatha çrāhmana, doubtless means ‘ sovereignty inherited through ten ancestors/ a striking case of hereditary rule. Weber once rendered the word as the £ kingdom of Daśapuru,’ comparing the Daśapura of Kālidāsa’s Meghadūta and the Daśārna of the ‘ middle country.’ pṛṣadājya Denotes ‘sprinkled butter’—that is, butter (Ajya) mixed with sour milk, in the Rigveda and later. brahmajya Oppressor of a Brahmin and Brahma-jyeya, ‘oppression of a Brahmin/ are terms mentioned several times in the Atharvaveda as expressing a heinous crime which involves its perpetrator in ruin. See Brāhmaṇa. bhaiṣajya In the śatapatha Brāhmaṇa and the Nirukta denotes ‘healing remedy’ or ‘medicine,’ like Bheṣaja. bhaujya In the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa denotes the rank of a prince bearing the title of Bhoja. māhārājya The dignity of a great king ’ (mahā-rāja), is mentioned in the Aitareya Brāhmana. rājya In the Atharvaveda and later regularly denotes ‘sovereign power,’ from which, as the śatapatha Brāhmaṇa notes, the Brahmin is excluded. In addition to Rājya, the texts give other expressions of sovereign power. Thus the śatapatha Brāhmaṇa4 contends that the Rājasūya sacrifice is that of a king, the Vājapeya that of a Samrāj or emperor, the status of the latter (Sāmrājya) being superior to that of the former (Rājya). The sitting on a throne (Ásandī) is given in the same text6 as one of the characteristics of the Samrāj. Elsewhere® Svārājya, ‘ uncon¬trolled dominion,’ is opposed to Rājya. In the ritual of the Rājasūya the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa7 gives a whole series of terms: Rājya, Sāmrājya, Bhaujya, Svārājya, Vairājya, Pāra- meṣṭhya, and Māhārājya, while Adhipatya, ‘ supreme power,’ is found elsewhere.8 But there is no reason to believe that these terms refer to essentially different forms of authority. A king might be called a Mahārāja or a Samrāj, without really being an overlord of kings; he would be so termed if he were an important sovereign, or by his own entourage out of compliment,' as was Janaka of Videha. That a really great monarchy of the Aśoka or Gupta type ever existed in the Vedic period seems highly improbable. vājya ‘Descendant of Vāja,’ is the patronymic of Ketu in the Vamśa Brāhmaṇa. vairājya See Rājya. sāmrājya See Samrāj and Rājya. svārājya See Rājya.

"jya" has 5 results. pūjya pāda originally a title, but mostly used in connection with the famous Jain grammarian देवनन्दिन् whose work on grammar called जैनेन्द्रव्याकरण is well-known: see देवनन्दिन्. prayojya that which is employed or incited or urged; the word which is the subject in the primitive construction and becomes an object in the causal construction, and as a result, which is put in the accusative case being प्रयोज्यकर्म. As, however, the प्रयोज्यकर्म originally occupies the place of the subject in the primitive construction, the term प्रयोज्यकर्ता ( प्रयोज्यश्चासौ कर्ता च ) is often used in connection with it, as contrasted with the term प्रयोजककर्ता which is used with respect to the subject in the causal construction; confer, compare इह च भेदिका देवदत्तस्य यज्ञदत्तस्य काष्ठानामिति प्रयोज्ये कर्तरि षष्ठी न प्राप्नोति । M.Bh. on P.
