Is the ordinary word for ‘jujube,’ the tree (Zizyphus jujuba) and the fruit, from the Yajurveda Samhitās onwards. The berry is red (:rohita). Compare Kuvala and Badara, which denote the fruit.
Is only the name borne by a protege of the Aśvins in the Rigveda. Its identity with the word for jujube indicates that the latter, though not otherwise mentioned there, was known at the time of the Rigveda.
A musical instrument, probably the ‘lute,’ occurs from the Rigveda onwards. The Maitrāyanī Samhitā mentions cattle branded on the ears with a mark resembling a lute (karkari-karnyah).
Is found in one passage of the Rigveda, where Roth sees in the expression sñro markah the ‘eclipse of the sun.’ Sāyaṇa thinks the meaning is ‘purifying.’
Is mentioned in the Taittirīya Samhitā and elsewhere as the Purohita, along with Saṇda, of the Asuras, while Bṛhaspati is, of course, the Purohita of the gods. Marka is mentioned elsewhere also. The name may quite possibly have Iranian affinities, as believed by Hillebrandt and by Hopkins. Hillebrandt also sees in a Gṛdhra mentioned in the Rigveda and elsewhere a prototype of Marka.
‘Ape,’ is enumerated in the list of victims at the Aśvamedha (‘ horse sacrifice ’) in the Yajurveda Samhitās. It is classified in the same Samhitās with man and the elephant as ‘ taking hold by the hand ’ (hastādāna) instead of ‘ taking hold by the mouth’ (mukhādāna). The animal is mentioned several times elsewhere also. Cf, Puruṣa Hastin, Mayu.
