atyarāti jānaṃtapi | Though not a prince, was taught the Rājasūya by Vāsistha Satyahavya, and thereupon conquered the earth. When Vāsistha reminded him of his indebtedness, and claimed a great reward, the warrior replied irascibly that he intended to conquer the Uttara Kurus, and that Vāsistha would then become King of the Earth, Atyarāti himself being his general (senā-pati). Vāsistha replied that as no mortal man could conquer the Uttara Kurus he was cheated of his reward. He consequently procured Atyarati’s defeat and death at the hands of Amitratapana Susmina Saibya. |

kapi | ‘Monkey,’ occurs only once in the Rigveda with reference to Vrsā-kapi, the ‘ Man-ape,’ in the dialogue of Indra and Indrānī in the presence of Vrsākapi. There the ape is termed the ‘ tawny ’ (harita). In the Atharvaveda the monkey is mentioned several times as hairy, and an enemy of dogs. That the ape was tamed appears from its position in the Vrsākapi hymn, and from the mention, in the Taittirīya Samhitā, of a Mayu as belonging to the forest. See also Mayu, Markata, and Purusa Hastin. |
![]() | |
kapi | Is, according to the St. Petersburg Dictionary, another name for Luśa Khārgali in the Kāthaka Samhitā, but the name appears rather to be Luśākapi. |
![]() | |
kapiñjala | The name of the ‘francoline partridge ’ or ‘hazel- cock,’ is found in all the Yajurveda Samhitās, and occasionally later. |
![]() | |
kapila | Appears in the śvetāśvatara Upanisad as a teacher, according to Weber and Garbe, who think that the expression kapila rsih there refers to the founder of the Sāñkhya philosophy. But this is doubtful. |
![]() | |
kapivana bhauvāyana | Is mentioned as a teacher in the Yajurveda Samhitās and the Pañcavimśa Brāhmana. A rite called Kapivana’s Dvyaha (‘ceremony lasting two days’) is also referred to in the Kātyāyana śrauta Sūtra. |
![]() | |
jānaṃtapi | ‘Descendant of Janamtapa,’ is the patronymic of Atyarāti in the Aitareya Brāhmana |
![]() | |
nāḍapit | Occurs in the śatapatha Brāhmana as the birthplace of Bharata. The word may, however, be read as Nāda-pitī, the name of Bharata’s mother, but this is less probable. |
![]() | |
napita | ‘Barber,’ is mentioned in the Satapatha Brāhmana and later. But the older word is Vaptr, a derivative of vap, ‘shave,’ with forms of which verb shaving is referred to as early as the Rigveda. The dead were shaved before burial. |
![]() | |
prapitāmaha | ‘Great-grandfather,’ is found in the later Samhitās and the Brāhmaṇas. |
![]() | |
prapitva | Is found in several passages of the Rigveda as a designation of time. In one passage the sense is made clear by the context: ‘at the rising of the sun’ (sūra udite), ‘at midday’ (madhycimdine divah), and ‘at the Prapitva, bordering on the night’ (apiśarvare). In another passage the sense of ‘late in the day’ also seems adequate, while the phrase abhipitve ahnali, ‘at the close of day,’ also denotes the evening. According to Geldner, the sense of the word is the ‘decisive moment’ in a race or a battle, and so the ‘ end of the day.’ Cf. Ahan |
![]() | |
rājapitṛ | Is one of the titles given to the king in the rite of the Rājasūya (‘royal consecration’) according to the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa. It probably designates the king as ‘ father of a king,’ and indicates the hereditary character of the monarchy. Possibly the later plan1 of associating the king’s son in the monarchy prevailed in earlier times also. |
![]() | |
luśākapi khārgali | (‘Descendant of Khṛgala ’) is mentioned in the Pañcavimśa Brāhmaṇa as having cursed Kuçītaka and the Kauṣītakins. He was a contemporary of Keśin Dālbhya according to the Kāthaka Samhitā. |
