yāma Used in the plural, denotes in one passage of the Atharvaveda, according to Roth, the planets among which the sun (bhaga) wanders. But both Bloomfield and Whitney accept the sense—the regular one in the later language—of 'night watches.’
yāman Denotes in the Rigveda a ‘march’ or ‘expedition’ in war.
pṛkṣayāma Occurs once in the plural in the Rigveda. Roth suggests the sense of ‘faring with swift steeds,’ and thinks a proper name is meant. Pischel holds that the word is an epithet of the Pajras, and that it means ‘ performing splendid sacrifices.’
pṛṣṭyāmaya Denotes in the Atharvaveda a pain in the sides or ribs. It appears to be mentioned there merely as an accompaniment of fever (Takman).
yudhyāmadhi Is apparently the name of a king who was defeated by Sudās. The mention of him occurring only in the verses added at the end of the hymn celebrating the victory of Sudās over the ten kings can claim little authenticity as a notice of Sudās.
vyāma In the Samhitās and the Brāhmaṇas denotes the ‘span’ of the outstretched arms as a measure of length. It may be estimated at six feet or equivalent to a fathom.
śyāma (‘Swarthy’) with Ayas (‘metal’) in all probability denotes ‘ iron ’ in the Atharvaveda. śyāma alone has the same sense in the Atharvaveda and later.
śyāmajayanta lauhitya (‘Descendant of Lohita’) is the name of a teacher, a pupil of Jayanta Pārāśarya, in a Vamśa (list of teachers) in the Jaiminīya Upaniṣad Brāhmaṇa. Another man of the same name occurs in the same place as a pupil of Mitpabhūti Lauhitya.
śyāmaparṇa Is, in the Kāthaka and Maitrāyaṇī Samhitās, the name of a man who was instructed by Somadakça Kauśreya.
śyāmasujayanta lauhitya (‘Descendant of Lohita’) is the name of a teacher, a pupil of Krçṇadhpti Sātyaki, in a Varpśa (list of teachers) of the Jaiminiya Upaniṣad Brāhmaṇa.
śyāmaka Is the name of a cultivated millet (Panicum frutnen- taceum) in the later Saiṇhitās and the Brāhmaṇas. The lightness of its seed is alluded to in the Atharvaveda, where it is spoken of as blown away by the wind. There it is also mentioned as the food of pigeons. The Syāmāka and its seed (Taṇdula) are referred to as very small in the Chāndogya Upaniṣad, where Max Mūller renders it as ‘canary seed.’
hṛdayāmaya ‘Disease of the heart,’ is mentioned in the Atharvaveda in connexion with Yakṣma and with Balāsa. Zimmer, who thinks that Balāsa is consumption, connects the name with the later view of the medical Samhitās, that love is one of the causes of the disease. But it would be more natural to see in it a disease affecting the heart.
