vīra In the Rigveda and later denotes ‘ man ’ as the strong and heroic. Collectively in the singular3 the word denotes ‘male offspring,’ an object of great desire (cf. Putra) to the Vedic Indian. The Pañcavimśa Brāhmaṇa gives a list of eight Vīras of the king, constituting his supporters and entourage.
vīrahatyā Murder of a man' is one of the crimes referred to in the Taittirīya Araṇyaka. The Vīra-han, man-slayer/ is often mentioned in the older texts. Cf Vaira.
vīraṇa is the form in the late Sadvimśa Brāhmaṇa (v. 2) of the name of the plant Vīriṇa.
aiṣāvīra The śatapatha Brāhmana once refers to the Aisā-vīras as officiating at a sacrifice, with the implication that they were bad sacrificers. Sāyana regards the word as a proper name (‘ descendants of Esavīra ’), denoting the members of a despised family. But Roth may be right in explaining the word both in the passage mentioned above and elsewhere as meaning ‘ weak ’or ‘ insignificant man.
pavīra According to the Nirukta, denotes a ‘lance.’ The epithet derived from this word, pavīravaηt or pavīrava, which is found in the Atharvaveda and the Yajurveda Samhitās, is used of the plough, apparently in the sense of ‘ having a metal share.’ The same epithet occurs in the Rigveda applied to a man, in the sense of * having a goad ’ or ‘ having a spear.’
bhūtavīra Is the name of a family of priests who, according to the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa, were employed by Janamejaya to the exclusion of the Kaśyapas. A family of the latter, the Asitamj’g’as, however, won back the favour of Janamejaya, and ousted the Bhūtavīras.
mahāvīra (‘Great hero’) is the name in the later Samhitās and the Brāhmaṇas of a large earthenware pot which could be placed on the fire, and which was especially employed at the introductory Soma ceremony called Pravargya.
śūravīra māṇdukya (‘Descendant of Mandūka’) is the name of a teacher in the Araṇyakas of the Rigveda.
