vāta Is the regular word for ‘wind’ in the Rigveda and later. Five winds are mentioned. In one passage Zimmer sees a reference to the north-east monsoon. Cf. Salilavāta.
vātapāna (‘wind guard’) apparently means some sort of garment as protecting against wind in the Taittirīya Samhitā.
vātaraśana ‘Wind-girt,’ is applied to the Munis in the Rigveda and to the Rṣis in the Taittirīya Aranyaka. Naked ascetics, such as are known throughout later Indian religious history, are evidently meant.
vātavant Is the name of a Rṣi in the Pañcavimśa Brāhmaṇa. He and Dṛti performed a certain Sattra or sacrificial session, but by stopping at a particular time he came to grief, and his descendants, the Vātavatas, were less prosperous than the Dārteyas.
vātavata ‘Descendant of Vātavant,’ is the patronymic of Vṛṣaśuṣma in the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa. The Kausītaki Brāhmaṇa2 has the same form with a variant Vādhāvata.
avāta See Vāta.
devavāta (Desired of the gods ’) is the name of a Bharata prince in the Rigveda, where he is mentioned as sacrificing on the Drsadvatī, Sarasvatī, and Apayā.
daivavāta Descendant of Devavāta,’ is the patronymic of Srñjaya, probably the Srñjaya king, in the Rigveda. He is mentioned as a devotee of the fire cult, and as victorious over the Turvaśa king and the Vrcīvants. According to Zimmer, his name was Abhyāvartin Cāyamāna Pārthava (‘ descendant of Prthu ’), but Hillebrandt4 recognizes this as doubtful, though he none the less places the Srñjayas to the west of the Indus with Divodāsa. What is more important is to note that the name suggests connexion with the Bharata Devavāta, and as Kurus and Srñjayas were closely connected this is not immaterial.
purovāta The ‘east wind,’ is mentioned in the later Sam- hitās and the Brāhmanas. Geldner thinks it merely means the wind preceding the rains.
pravāta ‘A windy spot,’ is mentioned in the Rigveda as the place where the Vibhītaka nuts, used as dice (Akça) grow. In the Taittirīya Samhitā reference is made to the exposure of decaying matter in such a place.
vāta Is in the Brāhmanas the name of the king’s : favourite’ wife, inferior to the Mahiṣī only.
salilavāta Occurs in the Yajurveda Samhitās as an adjective meaning ‘favoured with a wind from the water.’ It probably refers to the wind from the ocean, the south-west monsoon.
