tulā ‘Scales,’ is mentioned in the Vājasaneyi Samhitā. The śatapatha Brāhmana also speaks of the balance in connexion with the weighing of a man’s good and evil deeds in the next and in this world. This differs very considerably from the later balance ordeal, in which a man was weighed twice, and was pronounced guilty or innocent according as, on the second occasion, he was more or less heavy than on the first. It is not possible to read the later practice into the earlier.
