From this it follows that such an act must be performed so as not to cause destruction of one to whom the fruit is to accrue. This is discussed by जैमिनि and शबर in connection with the वैश्वानरेष्टि, whose fruit accrues to the son and which has to be performed only after the performance of the birth-rite to avoid the son's starvation to death. He is mentioned as a King of Kāśī (Kāśya) in the Brhadāranyaka and Kausītaki Upanisads, where he instructs the proud Brāhmana Bālāki as to the real nature of the self. He is not to be identified with the Ajātasattu of the Buddhist texts.
(‘Born together’) is found once in the Rigveda, and very often later. The word must clearly mean a relative,’ and then more widely a man of the same position or rank, but the senses cannot be distinguished, so much do they merge into each other. The Sajātas of a king are|of course princes; of anordinary man, Vaiśyas; of a military man, Kṣatriyas. But there is no clear reference to caste as in the later Sajāti (‘man of the same caste’). The disputes of Sajātas were notorious.
‘Well-born,’ is an epithet found applied to men in a few passages of the Rigveda. It would probably be a mistake to press the sense so as to denote ‘nobles’ as compared with the people. See Sabhā.
