ṛkṣa ‘ bear,’ is found only once in the Rigveda, and seldom later, the animal having evidently been scarce in the regions occupied by the Vedic Indians. Not more frequent is the use of the word in the plural to denote the ‘ seven bears,’ later called the ‘seven Rsis,’ the constellation of the ‘ Great Bear’ (άρκτος, ursd).
ṛkṣa Is the name of a patron mentioned in one verse of a Dānastuti (‘ Praise of Gifts ’) in the Rigveda, his son being referred to in the next verse as Arksa.
ṛkṣākā Is a word occurring once in an obscure passage of the Atharvaveda. The sense is quite unknown. Weber thinks it refers to the ‘ milky way,’ but his view rests on no evidence. Whitney despairs of the passage.
ṛkṣīkā A word found in the Atharvaveda, the Vājasaneyi Samhitā, and the Satapatha Brāhmana, appears to denote a demon. Harisvāmin, however, in his commentary on the Satapatha Brāhmana, connects the word with Rksa, as meaning ‘ bear.’
kṛkalāsa Denotes the chameleon ’ mentioned in the list of sacrificial victims at the horse sacrifice in the Yajurveda and later. The female chameleon, Krkalāsī, is also referred to in the Brāhmanas. See Godhā and Sayandaka.
kṛkavāku The ‘cock, being named in the Atharvaveda with sheep, goats, and other domesticated animals, was presumably tamed. In the -list of victims at the horse sacrifice in the Yajurveda, it appears as dedicated to Savitr: Yāska explains this by the fact that it declares the time of day (kālānuvāda). The commentator Mahīdhara explains the name by tāmra-cūda, ‘red-crested.’ It is of course onomato- poetic (‘ calling krka’). See also Kukkuta.
tṛkṣi Is, in the Rigveda, the name of a prince who was a Trāsadasyava, ‘ descendant of Trasadasyu.’ He also appears with the Druhyu and the Pūru peoples in another hymn. It has been conjectured, but it is not probable, that the steed Tārksya (as * belonging to Trksi ’) was his.
daśavṛkṣa Is the name of a tree, according to Roth, in the Atharvaveda. But Whitney treats the word as a mere adjective meaning ‘ of ten trees.’
dasyave vṛka ‘Wolf to the Dasyu,’ is the name of a man mentioned four times in the Rigveda. In one hymn he is called a Rsi, but in two others he is clearly a prince victorious over the Dasyus, and a generous patron of the singer. It is hardly necessary to assume different persons, for the term Rsi is not altogether inconsistent with royalty. He was son of Pūtakratu and Pūtakratā, his wife.
parivṛkta Are variant forms of the name of the rejected one among the royal wives. See Pati.
pṛkṣa (literally, perhaps ‘swift’) is the proper name of a man in an obscure verse of the Rigveda.
pṛkṣayāma Occurs once in the plural in the Rigveda. Roth suggests the sense of ‘faring with swift steeds,’ and thinks a proper name is meant. Pischel holds that the word is an epithet of the Pajras, and that it means ‘ performing splendid sacrifices.’
bāhuvṛkta Is the name of a man, apparently a Rṣi, who overcame foes in battle, according to the Rigveda.
mahāvṛkṣa A ‘great tree/ is mentioned sometimes in the Pañcavimśa Brāhmaṇa and in the Sūtras.
vṛka ‘Wolf,’ is mentioned frequently in the Rigveda, and also later. It was an enemy of sheep and of calves, being dangerous even to men. Its colour is stated to be reddish (arιιna).Q The ‘ she-wolf,’ Vṛkī, is also mentioned several times in the Rigveda.
vṛka In two passages of the Rigveda denotes ‘plough.’
vṛkadvaras Is found in one passage of the Rigveda, which Ludwig interprets as referring to a battle against Vṛkadvaras, king of the śaṇdikas. But this is quite uncertain. Roth and Oldenberg incline to read vrkadhvaras. Hillebrandt suggests Iranian connections, but without any clear reason.
vṛksa Is the ordinary term for tree' in the Rigveda and later. In the Atharvaveda it denotes the coffin made from a tree, no doubt by hollowing it out. The Ṣadviṃśa Brāhmaṇa refers to the portent of a tree secreting blood.
vṛkṣasarpī Tree-creeper is the name of a species of worm or female serpent in the Atharvaveda.
vṛkṣya In the śatapatha Brāhmaṇa denotes the 'fruit of a tree.'
śucivṛkṣa gaupālāyana (‘Descendant of Gopāla’) is the name of the priest of Vrddhadyumna Abhipratāriṇa in the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa. He is also mentioned in the Maitrāyaṇī Samhitā.
salāvṛkī See Sālāvrka.
sālāvṛka Is found twice in the Rigveda apparently denoting the ‘hyaena’ or 'wild dog.’ This sense also seems appropriate in the later narrative of the destruction of the Yatis by Indra, who is said to have handed them over to the Sālāvṛkas. Sālā- vrkeya is a variant form of the same word, meaning literally ‘ descendant of a Sālāvṛka.’ The feminine is Sālāvrkī, but in the Taittirīya Samhitā it appears as Salāvṛkī. Cf Tarakṣu.
sṛka In a couple of passages of the Rigveda denotes a weapon of Indra, perhaps a ‘ lance.’

ṛktantraa work consisting of five chapters containing in all 287 sūtras. It covers the same topics as the Prātiśākhya works and is looked upon as one of the Prātiśākhya works of the Sāma Veda. Its authorship is attributed to Śākaṭāyana according to Nageśa, while औदिव्राज is held as its author by some, and कात्यायन by others. It bears a remarkable similarity to Pāṇini's Pāṇini's Aṣṭādhyāyī. especially in topics concerning coalescence and changes of स् and न् to ष् and ण् respectively. It cannot be definitely said whether it preceded or followed Pāṇini's work.
ṛkprātiśākhyaone of the Prātiśākhya works belonging to the Aśvalāyana Śākha of the Ṛg Veda. The work available at present, appears to be not a very old one, possibly written a century or so after Pāṇini's time. It is possible that the work, which is available, is based upon a few ancient Prātiśākhya works which are lost. Its authorship is attributed to Śaunaka. The work is a metrical one and consists of three books or Adhyāyas, each Adhyāya being made up of six Paṭalas or chapters. It is written, just as the other Prātiśākhya works, with a view to give directions for the proper recitation of the Veda. It has got a scholarly commentary written by Uvaṭa and another one by Kumāra who is also called Viṣṇumitra. See अाश्वलायनप्रातिशाख्य.
